Poem "Snake" Summary
Summary in English
The poem 'Snake' is written by D.H Lawrence. He was born in a mining village in Nottinghamshire. This poem is about brutality to animals.
The poet was in Sicily, and it was a very hot day in July. He came with a pitcher to fill it with water-trough. A snake was there to drink water. So the narrator stood still to wait for his turn. It was a golden-brown snake. The narrator had learned that in Sicily yellow snakes were poisonous but the black snakes were innocent. His education prompted him that he should muster courage and kill the snake at once. But the poet was fascinated by the beauty and grace of the snake. So he did not try to kill it.

Later the poet tried to analyse his behaviour. He thought perhaps he did not kill the snake because he was a coward. But he concluded that the main cause of his not killing the snake was that he had felt honoured by its presence. The snake was a king of the underworld who had come as his guest.
The snake was drinking water. It rested its throat on the edge of the trough. While it drank , it raised its head as cattle do, and looked around dreamily . He did not take any notice of the poet's presence . He drank to his fill. He flicked his forked tongue as if to smack its lips.
Having satisfied its thirst , the snake turned his head around. It began to move slowly and gracefully climbing the broken wall.
Now he put his head into the dark hole and drew his body behind him. When only his tail was still out of the hole , the poet was shocked that the snake was going back into the horrible hole. He picked up a log and threw it at the snake. Probably it did not hit the snake who wriggled and hastily disappeared into the hole.
Now the poet was filled with a sense of guilt. He thought it was petty and mean of him. He hated himself and cursed his education. He felt like the sailor who had shot albatross dead. He wanted to atone for his sin. He wished the snake came again so that he could make amends.
